Sandy Garnett was born at Fort Belvoir, Virginia and raised in Pennsylvania, London and Connecticut. At St. Lawrence University in upstate New York Garnett started his art studio and made art for 50 bands and production companies while in college. He is a self-taught artist and has been a full time professional painter and sculptor since he graduated. His work can be found in 40 U.S. states and ten countries through his network of five hundred collectors. He recently signed his 1035th painting and is proofing a hardcover book he spent years on entitled, “Sandy Garnett; The First 1000 Paintings.”
Garnett has developed a reputation as a self-sufficient, prolific painter, sculptor, and writer who has built his career on the fringes of the New York art world over the past 20 years. His overarching premise as a self-described ‘first generation Reconstructionist’ is to build bridges between the genres, which explains his process of working concurrently in a number of distinct series of paintings and sculptures. He is best known for his twenty year running Fingerprint Project, in which he explores contemporary identity through sculpted and painted fingerprints, human silhouettes and signatures. He is also collected for his Twister reliefs, his figure paintings, his Reconstruction series of narratives and cityscapes, and his portraiture.
The art of Sandy Garnett has been placed in museum, public, corporate, and private collections, including the GM Museum, Pepsico, Chevrolet, Corcoran Jennison, St. Lawrence University, and the Town of Stamford, CT. In 2001 The New York Times declared his Fingerprint Project ‘Cutting Edge Art.’ His work has been reviewed by The New York Times, The New York Art World, New York Spaces Magazine, The Gallery Guide, The Hartford Courant, Interior Design Magazine, Connecticut Cottages and Gardens, Fairfield County Business Weekly, The Stamford Advocate, Greenwich Times, the Westchester regional newspapers and the Fairfield County regional newspapers.
In the past several years Garnett has curated shows at the Loft Gallery in Stamford, CT. His first recorded song Busted Wing made it into a Teton Gravity Research film in 2009. in 2011 he releaseed his first 5 song EP. The artist also wrote, illustrated and published his first two Rainbow Riders children’s books in 2009 while he works on the next two installments of this series. His coming of age story, 'Baloney Express,' is Garnett’s first turn as author and has received strong reviews since its publication in 2011. Garnett is currently writing his second and third books. 'The First 1000 Paintings of Sandy Garnett' and 'Sandy Garnett Paintings and Sculptures Inventory' were published in 2012 and are the first full color, hard cover art catalogues which represent Garnett's twenty years as a professional painter and sculptor.
The artist is interested in developing business relations with established galleries in the U.S. and Europe. He has worked with Rebecca Hossack in London, and Mr. Edward Mitterand has expressed interest in Zurich were Garnett to have a New York gallerist to take him there. Garnett is ready for the Art Fair market and larger platforms at this point in his career. Please contact with inquiries. His art, books and music are available at www.sandygarnett.com.
