In high school Garnett became interested in making art for bands. An avid Grateful Dead and classic rock fan, the artist found inspiration in the art of rock that permeated the sixties, inspired in part by the Art Nouveau masters of the 1890's. He made tee shirts and posters that he sold in the parking lots of Dead shows. He made art for high school bands before going to St. Lawrence University. At SLU from his dorm room Garnett made art for fifty bands and his work was seen across the nation before he graduated from college and before he painted his first picture.
