This section will follow the careers of knockoff artists, which should be fun.
There is one Canadian company started in 2005 that makes false claims to having 'invented' Fingerprint Portraiture 15 years after Garnett began exploring Identity through his Fingerprint Project, which included DNA portraits, Retinal Portraits, Lip Portraits (Madonna 1990), Signature Portraits, and Silhouette Portraits.
Garnett bought 20 names around fingerprintportrait.com in the late nineties, and his was the only name that came up on search engines regarding Fingerprint Portraits until this Canadian company bought search space and started offering cheap imitation inkjet prints, something anyone can do in the comfort of his own home these days.
Garnett's largest issue with this company, aside from the fact that they claim to have invented Fingerprint Portraits (a name that Garnett has trademarked by the way), is that the media and contemporary art markets support this company (Museum of Modern Art in NYC, for example).
This company, coincidentally, also falsely lays claim to having invented DNA Portraits, something that Garnett explored for a short spell, although he found the process of gathering human matter in order to process DNA downright creepy so he didn't go too far with that one. There are several artists/designers who explored DNA Portraits before this Canadian company as well. To date this company that claims to have invented 'DNA Art' and is 'like the Steve Jobs' of 'DNA Art' is in fact a simple case of several posers with no honor breaking trademark laws.
Never put it past either the media or the High Art world to miss glaring errors with respect to the historical record.
It has been said that 'imitation is the best form of flattery,' written by someone who took the high road.
Check back for more exciting updates on what artists and companies are knocking off Garnett's twenty year running Fingerprint Project.
