Do I need my children need to sit for a portrait?
Generally I work with photo references, particularly because my collectors have unfortunate memories of sitting in starchy formal clothing for hours when they were little. I will do a quick photo shoot or work with family photographs that are provided to me.
Do I do single portraits of my children or a group portrait?
This really depends upon your family traditions and what feels right. Often times collectors will opt for individual portraits as these paintings can ultimately go to each child, but as my portfolio displays I find group portraits challenging and rewarding for their narrative complexity.
Can I make an alteration with a photo reference? I love a photo of my family member but the background is not compellling.
I am well versed at using multiple photo references in my paintings. I can use different photo references and place my portrait subjects in any landscape or interior that suits the commission. Often with group portraits I will work with a number of references to compose the appropriate painting composition.
How long does a commission take?
From three weeks to two months, depending upon the projects I have in the studio.
Do you need to meet your subjects?
I have been commissioned to paint postmortum portraits and surprise commissions for people across the country, so this is not necessary provided I have photo references that truly represent the subject(s) of the portrait commission. I like to hear anecdotes and stories about my subject from friends and family in these cases so I can think about these things while I am painting.
What if a change is required for a commission? Are you amenable to that?
I guarantee all of my commission work and a commission is not complete until my collector is satisfied and delighted with the work. In some cases I have started again from scratch, although this is very rare. If an alteration is required it is literally a brushstroke or two, and these instances are unusual.
