Garnett has been making self-portraits since college. They reflect his interests as a first generation Reconstructionist in exploring one subject matter in a number of painting genres and lights. Garnett has mentioned that in painting his own face nobody is offended, nobody cares and so he can be as ruthless or exploratory as possible.
